The Challenge

Smarter Humans' entire product promise rests on timing: knowing the exact moment a learner is about to forget something and resurfacing it then. Get that timing wrong and the promise breaks.

Manual flashcard creation was the single biggest reason users abandoned the product before finishing onboarding. Precision annotation had to land on exact coordinates across textbooks running past a thousand pages, without freezing the interface. With a paying subscriber base already depending on the platform daily, a scheduling bug carried the weight of a broken promise.

Our Solution

Hygge built an AI pipeline that generates flashcards, key concepts, and explanations directly from a learner's own uploaded material, paired with a retrieval-augmented assistant grounded in that same material.

A custom-built document viewer replaced the commercial rendering SDK the platform depended on, cutting load time on large PDFs from 15–20 seconds to immediate streaming. Native apps now sync directly between a learner's own devices over WebRTC, so cross-device study works even offline.

When the client changed identity from iDoRecall to Smarter Humans, the whole platform moved with it: application, infrastructure and every touchpoint.

Step 5 - Legacy Migration

A million users moved from the old architecture onto the rebuilt system, with the platform live throughout.

Step 6 - AI Generation Pipeline

Flashcard and concept generation built into the product, so a learner turns their own material into practice without typing it out.

Step 7 - Grounded Study Assistant

Retrieval-augmented chat answering from the learner's own documents, with instant pre-populated study groups on top of it.
